M.O reveal all ahead of their Tramlines show
M.O return to Tramlines this year, performing at Devonshire Green on Saturday night. We caught up with Annie Ashcroft from M.O ahead of their performance to talk about their musical influences, signature style and to find out what ‘Modus Operandi’ means to them.
First of all, talk us through your band name…
Modus operandi is Latin for mode of operation, a particular way of doing something to achieve your goal and dreams. We first heard it in a drake song, looked into the meaning of it and thought it fitted perfectly!
How did you all meet?
Well we were all in different groups at the same time, so we kind of met along the way. We were at a few of the same parties and events and we just bonded instantly, mainly about the kind of music we all loved, grew up on, and the kind of music we all really wanted to be making.
Who are your biggest musical influences?
We’re all massively inspired by TLC, Aaliyah and All Saints. Just everything about them, from their music and style to how they’re not afraid to be exactly who they want to be!
Not only do you share the same musical tastes but you also have a very similar style.
You know, as a girl group you don't always have to wear dresses and heels. There's absolutely nothing wrong with dressing up but we love throwing on baggy clothes and trainers. When we're shopping we usually go straight to the men's section!
You’ve been working with some exciting new talent such as Yungen, Bless Beats and The Heavytrackerz. What’s been the best thing about working with those guys?
They’re all extremely talented people and are a lot of fun to work with. We put out an EP that involved all those guys so that was cool! Yungen came down to our first sold out headline show and joined us on stage. He's a really sweet guy.
You're making your Tramlines debut this year. What can people expect from your performance?
We’re so excited about Tramlines! Because it's my home city, I’ll definitely be more nervous than usual. The crowd can expect one big M.O party!
What is your favourite song to perform live?
I love performing all our songs, I feel like each one shows our journey over the last 3 years. If I had to choose a favourite it would be Who Do You Think Of.
And finally, artists on the bill are you most looking forward to catching at Tramlines?
Definitely All Saints.
